Where Curiosity Began
The old photograph his wife keeps brings back memories of the mountain village in Hubei Province where Honglin HE grew up. There were few machines around him, and most mechanical parts came from discarded equipment.
As a boy, he was fascinated by anything mechanical or electrical. He used his small savings to buy discarded copper wire, gears, motors and components, then took them apart, studied how they worked and tried to rebuild them. Long before he knew the language of engineering, two habits had already taken root: take it apart, and understand how it works.
